Let's talk about a product thats near and dear to me... the Barrier Serum!
The Barrier Serum launched in 2021, it was our 4th product. The Barrier Serum is the foundation of any skincare routine. Its crucial whether your concern is maintenance, anti aging, or clearing your breakouts. I'm going to tell you why!
One of the ways that I cured my acne was restoring my skin barrier. It's also one of the most common errors I see industry-wide.
Historically we've marketed medicated products to the acne consumer.
Namely, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, etc.
Nothing is inherently wrong with these ingredients, but they are recommended very generally for acne when they should be used more surgically.
We strip the skin barrier unknowingly when used incorrectly! Which causes more breakouts.
So when I started coaching acne clients, I noticed a pattern, they were almost all following the same cycle; attempting to use harsh, medicated products for their acne and inadvertently causing more breakouts.
And when I put them on a sensitive skincare routine, their skin would significantly improve.
A sensitive skincare routine restores the skin barrier! So eventually the Barrier Serum was born.
This product is like a clear silky velvety serum that acts as an AMAZING occlusive.
Meaning it has a strong ability to seal in anything that goes underneath it.
This is a great feature for a barrier restorative product because one of the main features of the skin barrier is its ability to hold itself together in a self-sustaining ecosystem.
Basically the skin barrier regulates the environment and health of the skin, so when that is damaged, bacteria easily gets in and water easily gets out.
Applying the Barrier Serum not only superficially creates this layer but it also restores the skin's natural barrier through adding in lipids.
Lipids are the skin barriers natural building blocks. Lipids hold in water and keep out bacteria.
You can feel your skin's natural texture is a little waxy, that's the barrier I'm talking about!
The Bauer Beauty Barrier Serum also contains ceramides which is one of my favorite barrier restorative ingredients!
It feels like oil but it dries completely matte, it's not greasy whatsoever. And that is because even though it feels like oil, it contains very little oil. It's mainly silicone!
A strong skin barrier is required to prevent premature aging as well.
A weak skin barrier will create inflammation, redness, dryness, and aging.
It will also prevent you from using any anti-aging treatments such as retinol or chemical peels.
Because when your skin barrier is weak, you cannot tolerate these more aggressive ingredients!
That's why the Barrier Serum is THE staple in your routine. I cannot imaging life without it honestly.
How I recommend using:
In the morning after cleansing, apply directly on damp skin. It's the best at trapping water in which is why I love doing it this way.
If you use vitamin c, you can use that after this dries down. Or you can apply before this, let it absorb, then apply the Barrier Serum on top.
Follow with sunscreen! It's that perfect layer before sunscreen. You want a layer, but you dont want a full moisturizer since your sunscreen IS a moisturizer.
At night, same thing, apply before or after retinol depending on the day & how strong you want your retinol.
The Barrier Serum will act as a buffer on days you're feeling more sensitive.
You can also apply as the last step in your nighttime routine if your moisturizer is more watery!
